DELORES AND NORTH OF PROVIDENCE

Director's Note

“We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother…” Henry V

There is a reason why soldiers call each other “brothers”. Because there is a unique bond between people who share trauma, loss, defeat, joy, victory and… death. The closest relationship a solider can compare it to is siblings. When the home can at times be a war zone or safe haven while growing up. You never got to choose your brother or sister. Like solders thrown into the front lines, you are expected to get along with each other no matter how different you are. At times you cling to each other for dear life… and other times… you want to strangle the life out of them. Envy, love, betrayal, jealousy, understanding and empathy can happen between siblings in a split second.

Edward Allen Baker has given us two one acts that I feel have captured the rawness of all of these elements. His honest approach to how these siblings fight for what they believe and ultimately for each other is not only theatrically exciting, but also brutally honest. These are siblings that have been through extreme trauma… and like soldiers, must find a way to cling together and survive.

I dedicate these two plays to my brother, Victor, and my sister, Yelena.

For the countless battles that we fought together…
For all the times when you carried me when I couldn’t go any further...
For making me laugh when all I wanted was to cry.
For when you stood on that hill and
Defended my hopes and dreams when everyone else had abandoned me...
For giving me the gift of…
Acceptance and forgiveness…
I love you both… and miss you both dearly.

These are intense, deeply felt stories and they’re performed here, under the fine direction of Alberto Bonilla, with raw, wrenching abandon.
